Candy for the senses

Finally, Making Scents of New York
Perfumery
has always been about head-turning.

Now, perfumes have been turned on their head.
For the first time in fragrance history, a major, full-blown fragrance collection was launched as an homage to a great city.
The name of this fragrance collection is Bond No. 9 (which is also the address of its headquarters boutique at 9 Bond Street, in NoHo). The city it celebrates is none other than — could be no other than — New York.

Each fragrance represents a specific downtown, midtown, or uptown locale or a city-wide sensibility.

I want the pretty bottles.
Like this Astor Place Swarovski Limited Edition bottle.
Notes: Violet Leaf, Mandarin Zest, Freesia, Red poppy buds, Orris (iris root), teakwood, Musk and Amber.

Check out the website...it's a treat for the eyes.

Fab Friday

Good morning fashionistas! I hope your weather is as beautiful as it is here in the Kansas City metro. Blue skies and sunshine make me want to SHOP!

Avelle (the new Bag Borrow or Steal) is celebrating 5 fabulous years of renting accessories by giving 30% off a huge selection of handbags, jewelry, sunglasses and more. I did a "ooh yum yum" when I saw the Kan Kan tote by BE&D. Normally $195 per month for members, now just $130. Not bad for a tote that retails for nearly $1400! Yum yum indeed.

Yesterday I took advantage of the amazing discounts at Soho119 in Leawood, KS. I picked up a smoking hot, red dress that I'm wearing to the Rock N Fashion show in downtown KC tonight. If you are anywhere near our area you MUST check out this show. After several successful shows I expect this one to be the best yet. Doors open tonight at 7pm at the Crosstown Station.

Online shopping at KateSpade.com, enjoy the last day of 20% off.
That's all for me. I've got to get the dear ready for Rock N Fashion. Yes, it will take me 11 hours...so what? If you make it to the show, I'll be upstairs with my video crew doing interviews, giving away Haute goodies and having a good time. cheers!

Anniversary Party

If you have read my blog since the beginning, or only recently, you should know that I adore handbags (and shoes and dresses) and that I have a shopping-affair with Avelle. I am so excited that I will be their guest blogger in May, but even MORE excited that their anniversary celebration starts today!
If you haven't joined Avelle New Bag Borrow or Steal yet, do it now!
New members can enjoy a $25 credit on borrowing a handbag! That would make MANY bags 50% off or more! Just use code: 25DOLLARS (exp. 5/13/09).

Please don't let me down my faithful fashionistas. And DO NOT carry an old worn out, out-of-date bag when this spring holds such fabulous trends and treats. Citrus colors are "IN" and so many available for rent right now. Or, if you become a member, you get access to the fabulous outlet full of seriously discounted goods.

I'm currently borrowing the Lipstick handbag by Timmy Woods.
Love it!

Deals of the Day

Here are a few fab deals I just HAD to share with my fashionista friends:

Avelle - the new Bag Borrow or Steal (as seen on Sex & the City) is doing a "Luxe find of the day". They pick one handbag and put it 1/2 off the regular monthly rental price! It's ridiculously inexpensive to have a Gucci, Coach, etc.
today's find? Gucci bag for just $38 a month. Hurry though....that deal will be snatched up quickly!

GAP - Summer shorts, buy one get one 50% off. Can combine with kids, mens, women's, etc. Doesn't apply to swim shorts. Expires 4/29/09.

Stain, stain go away

Don't be alarmed...I am not switching to a cleaning product site. I just can't keep this great little tip from my fashionistas though!

I bought this Dreft pretreater pen to carry in my purse because I thought it would be handy and necessary having three little boys. I use it more on MY clothes than theirs! I am constantly dripping coffee on my shirts, dropping my mascara on my clothes while trying to apply in the car, etc. It has saved so many of my clothes! It's about $4 and worth every penny! I recommend ordering a large shipment from drugstore.com so you can have one at home, one in the car, one in your desk drawer, etc.

Save the clothes! Dot it with the Dreft pen.

Check back on the Avelle blog for each new deal of the day!

Boys & bags?

I wouldn't normally go to a boy for fashion advice...but cutie Jack Mackenroth has such good taste (and always makes me laugh) that I just had to get his two cents on what a girl must have:

"I would say given the current economy , if you are going to buy something new then stick with something you will get some mileage out of like a fabulous bag or pair of shoes. The fall 09 collections featured a lot of metallics and fur and luxury but those collections were started many months ago and many of the trends are unrealistic now. If I were a woman I would buy a big carry all bag in matte gold. Maybe I will anyway."

Well, there you have it. Watch for Jack strutting around the big apple with his big gold man-bag.

Gucci tote pictured is available at Avelle - the new Bag Borrow or Steal, just $95 a month for members.

Making Statements

What accessory or item of clothing do you have that is a "statement piece"?
None? Several?
I quickly went looking for statement pieces today because I woke up with this desire to drool over some Christian Louboutin shoes.

I went straight to Neiman Marcus for some quick and easy finds. I found these fabulous earrings that are so unique and so beautiful...but so out of my price range for something that small. Plus I refuse to buy myself jewelry over a few hundred dollars...that's my husband's job. MCL by Matthew Campbell Laurenza Enamel Drop Earrings
945.00

A bit more in a non-stomach churning price range? How about these ABS by Allen Schwartz Teardrop Earrings, $95.00. Not quite the equivalent in "statement" but still a brilliant design.

On to shoes!!!

Spring reigns with Louboutin's amazing new line this season. Several statement pieces. This Dillon Pump, $2875 at Nieman Marcus. Made with natural python (sorry, can't ship to California) with a fabulous ruffle and nearly 5 inch heel.
Of course the signature red sole.
And this is spring 09 collection so you'd be pre-ordering with a ship date around 4/17.

A bit more simple and not so "statement" is this Triple Plateform sandal. Choose bone or black patent calf leather. Stacked heel reaches 5.5 inches. $1,095 at Nieman Marcus.

Seriously, I bought a black pair so similar to this at DSW for about $50. (shown in brown). Ok, slightly different, but in a more attainable price range for most women I know. They are comfortable too. Thought I'd recommend inserting the Printz pads from Apara.

Happy shopping (or drooling).
Need to go dig some quarters out from under the seats in the mini van and in the laundry - gotta add to mommy's shopping fund for a new statement item!

What's that in your pocket?

I love when businesses push the envelope a little bit with their marketing. I especially love it when it makes me either GASP with surprise or laugh out loud. This new product brought out both expressions:

Pocket Rocket lip gloss by Urban Decay.
Front and rear photos are included for your viewing pleasure, and the flat tube slides right into your pocket.

And, this lip gloss formula is so slick and cushiony you would love it even if it were packaged in a plain ol' squeezy tube. Each highly pigmented shade varies in opacity and finish, and the will satiate your sweet tooth.

The formula contains Hyaluronic Spheres known to improve cellular function, prevent dehydration, and fill in lines and wrinkles.

Support Kelsey's Law!

Because doing good is fashionable and beautiful...

The cell phone bill, now named the Kelsey Smith Act, cleared the Kansas Senate Utilities Committee and will be heard by the full Senate on Tuesday, March 24th. Hooray!
Parents, Greg and Missey, will be in attendance. Keep them in your thoughts today as they continue to honor Kelsey in such a positive way.

Brief summary:
Kelsey was kidnapped and murdered almost two years ago from an Overland Park, KS store parking lot. Although having access to certain cell phone records may not have saved Kelsey's life, it would have helped authorities, and her family, find her body sooner than 4 days after the fact.
The new Act will enable authorities to gain access to certain cell phone records/info rapidly in case of an emergency. Perhaps one day this will save the life of another.

Follow the progress of the Act, and hopefully celebrate it's unanimous passing, on Facebook. Just search Kelsey's Law and you can join the group.

Please contact your senator and ask them to support the Kelsey Smith Act. Also, please contact all of the Senate Utilities Committee Members and thank them for getting the bill out of committee. Senate Majority Leader, Senator Derek Schmidt (Derek.Schmidt@senate.ks.gov)

Let's get this bill spread to every state!

Fakes - getting the tan

icon
iconCoppertone Endless Summer Gradual Tan
LOVED IT. If you can be patient and give yourself a few days to get your tan, this is well worth the wait! The lotion has a pleasant smell, it goes on very easily, and the tan looks extremely natural. My friends all thought that I had been tanning. I would call this a very natural look, like you’ve been “kissed” by the sun. Currently $9.49 at Beauty.com with buy one get one 1/2 off.

Almay Sunless Tanning Gel
The gel formula is harder to apply than the lotion or foam. It is slippery, and if you are not careful, can make a huge stained mess. The smell is nice…probably the best of all three. The tan is instant, but a bit on the orange side. You need to reapply every few hours to get the color you want. I wouldn’t buy it again.

icon
icon
Neutrogena Instant Bronze Streak Free Foam
STINKY!!!! If you can handle the super-strong, super-sugary cookie dough scent, then this is the stuff for you. It is INSTANT. Pretty dark, and brownish/orange finish. The foam is the easiest to apply out of all three self tanners. As with all tanners, you need to be careful when applying this on elbows, heels, & rough patches. As long as you exfoliate before hand, you should be ok.

It appears that Neutrogena already has reworked this product because we could only find the new Sun Fresh line with this note: The clean citrus scent with notes of grapefruit and nectarine goes on fresh and stays fresh all day. Thank goodness...no more stink!

Another Manic Monday

I know that at least the moms who read my blog are already sitting at the computer, sucking down as much coffee as possible so we can head into spring break week with some energy.
I thought I'd share some quickie tips and tricks to get you through the week without looking as haggard as you'll feel.

For a quick face cleaning try these fantastic facial wipes by simple, the sensitive skin specialists. 100% oil and alcohol free.
I use these when I go tanning. Quick and easy way to get my makeup off without greasy residue. I use again after tanning because it feels so refreshing.
Buy online at DuaneReade.com. Great for those mornings when you need to get ready quickly and get out of the house.

iconNext slap on a bit of sun. L'Oreal's Sublime face bronzer has dual chambers, yet when the pump is used, comes out it one neat blob. I use this immediately after shower and wait as long as possible to apply anything over it. Gives gradual color and a bit of color to my otherwise tired looking face.

It might help to get through the week if you have something to look forward to that is just for you. My friend Cari of Gennaio boutique is having a fabulous open house sale at her trendy shop in Raymore, Missouri.

TGIF

For some of us, Friday is still a school day this week and therefore qualifies as TGIF. My friends just to to the east a few blocks have a different school district and therefore have their sweet little monsters already off for Spring Break. Good luck with that girls! ;)
Don't look to me for kids activity ideas and advice. I throw mine outside with a cardboard box and tell them to get on with it...mommy has to "work".

But since it's Friday I don't feel much like working (not so different from most days really) and so I thought I'd put a call out to my loyal fashionistas to supply me with some writing material. Tell me what products you've tried and loved, or hated. Beauty products can cost a fortune so none of us needs to waste money on crap that doesn't work, stinks, turns us orange or doesn't actually give us a "face lift at home".

Share and share alike my friends.
Next week in the weekly e-newsletter we'll share more reviews about self-tanning products. I loaned a few bottles to a fashionable friend and she's got some dishing to do.
Make sure you are subscribed for your weekly "Haute fix" each Tuesday morning!

By the way....become a fan of Haute Weekly on Facebook, or follow us on Digg, Delicious, and whatever all the others are that my young and hip intern signed me up for. Happy Friday!

Almost New Denim Brand

Les Halles was a huge, huge denim brand in the late '70s, early '80s and is now being re-launched by the original founders, Marlene and Stephen Baum, along with their daughter, Remy.

How it happened...again:
Remy recently graduated from college and was poking around her mother's closet when she found a pair of original Les Halles jeans and thought it would be a great idea to re-launch the Company. The jeans she found are the latest craze in denim - the "boyfriend" jean, and hence, the Company has redesigned their "boyfriend" jean from the '70s for today's modern woman (along with a bunch of other styles).

The re-launch of the Les Halles brand from 1979 is a true family affair, and the 7 denim styles that have made their debut are exceptional in fit, fabric, and design. And the price point - $62 (jean shorts) to $120 (jeans) for premium denim is great in these economic times. The Company has not sacrificed fabric or fit.

Also, according to the retailers that are already carrying the jeans (including ravinstyle.com), they are flying off the shelves - the Boy Jean and the Straw.

The brand is already gathering a great celebrity fan base. Erin Lucas from The City, Julianne Moore, and Maria Menounos are huge fans!!
The company sent me a pair from their very first run (or is that re-run?). They had some tweaks to the fit at the time but I hear they are fabulous now. They are SO comfortable!

Watch for the Les Halles brand near you and be a trendsetter in your city. Now go poke around in your parents closet. Maybe you'll find a treasure among the plaid bell bottoms.

Burn baby burn

It's difficult to be a fashionista AND play one on tv. ;)
It's especially difficult to juggle it all and still be ready on time each morning. I've learned to start early to allow myself a bit of time, but last weekend I was in a rush and paid a horrible price. I am scarred by the experience. Truly!

If you are going to crank up the curling iron to the hottest setting and still rush...know that a burn at 395 degrees is going to do some damage.
It doesn't even look like I have a monster hickey on my neck. It just looks like I'm incredibly stupid.
For such similar occasions in your home (especially if you have kids) I highly recommend having this product by WaterJel on hand. My eyes were watering like they do when you bang your nose. I have never had such a painful curling iron burn and had to send hubby scrambling to Walgreens to get anything to take away the pain. What he found for me was this brand but with pain relief something or other in it. It worked fabulously.
It's online at drugstore.com for $6.29. It's worth every penny.
Lesson learned.

Laughs in the Mail

Snog Balm Cheeky Mint
For the last few weeks I have been getting lots of goodies and samples delivered to my door. None have made me nearly pee my pants like today's treasure.

I grabbed out of the box two packages of Snog Balm and lost it!
If you know anyone remotely English, you know what a good snogging is and that you need some lip balm for it.

I haven't heard the term used by my English hubby for a while now, but I do remember stories he retold of his youth about snogging with the birds.

So if you are going to have a good snog, I suggest first preparing the said snogging area with a good coating of Snog Balm. I prefer the "cheeky mint" flavor myself. Said husband has not returned from a long day in the fields as of yet, but I'll soon see for myself how well the Snog Balm works out. ;)

Post a comment here about your latest good snogging and send me an email when you do so. If I pick your story as the best, I'll send you a sample of Snog Balm! jennifer@hauteweekly.com

Home Sweet Home

Good morning fashionistas. I am finally back in Oz. I love my brief visits to the big apple but brief is all I can take. Oh how I longed for oxygen infused air! My hair was a wreck all week at is soaked up all the exhaust and subway fumes. My skin, however, was fabulous thanks to my host and contributing editor, Sarah. She works for Peter Thomas Roth and as a result has a sick amount of skin care products to play with and test. The chamomile cleanser is the best!

Fashion Week ends today and is all such a blur to me right now. I lost track of how many fashion shows I attended after seeing 6 on my first day there.
I was tickled to run into my fab fashion friend Jack Mackenroth at Chipotle of all places. We love to bitch about the trials of covering fashion week. Jack has been covering fashion week for the logo network so has his own entourage of makeup and film crew with him. Quite funny but it keeps him looking divine at all times. I'm green with envy babe.

I also took the wrong train one day and had the pleasure of being in Queens for a brief time. That was different. :) After that I studied the subway system and have it nearly mastered.

Wednesday night I attended my favorite beauty event of the year. The CEW (cosmetic executive women) Network's Beauty Insiders Choice Awards. Where beauty execs from nearly every beauty company known to woman converge to put their newest items on display in hopes we will vote for them. I come away with about 30 pounds of beauty swag to give away on the blog and the Haute Weekly site. Stay tuned and join the newsletter for your chance at winning my swag!

NY Fashion Week update

Hey there fashionistas. Checking in from the Big Apple to keep you in-the-know and up to date. Fall 09 fashion week brings mixed emotions and mixed reviews. Definitely is lacking what years gone by have put forth. Since several designers backed out of fashioon week the schedule is riddled with more newcomers than usual. Some should have stayed hidden where they were.

Fashion Week also brings out the freaks of fashion. I cannot understand why the fashion police do not stop these people at the doors!?! Seriously. I am quite certain that I was no where near inebriated when I spotted MC Hammer reminicent pants. Not to mention a mohawk and a pirate hat. The pirate boy..I wanted to slap him upside the head and steal his hat for my boys! That sort of hat only belongs in a movie or on a 6 year old.

I found a fabulous store today in the East Village, Cadillac Castle. They carry designer samples at a fraction of retail. A sexy Nanette Lapore dress for only $80! I scored a fun Walter trench coat that will be perfect for spring for just under $150....over HALF of retail.

Also met up with and interviewed the talented young Jamie Phyl of Phyl Couture. We met at St. Louis fashion week a year ago. I loved her style then and it gets better with time. Watch for a complete article with photos and video coming soon!

Another fab find from Fashion Week - I ran in to my gorgeous Jack Mack....at Chipotle of all places! Jack is interviewing designers for the LOGO network and has a hilarious blog going where he says what others dare not to. My kind of dish! http://www.newnownext.com/ New Now Next is Jack's current home on the web for all things feisty about fashion week.

Though I completely disagree with Jack about the fabulousity (or not) of Barbie...we do share a hatred of a certain PR company, which is way more fun to bitch about than the actual shows.

So many shows, so many photos...so little sober time at the computer thanks to the complimentary bar in the tents ;)

I will post more photos soon. It's not like us Midwest fashionistas are ready for Fall09 anyway....we can't even wear spring 09 yet for goodness sakes!

Join the HauteWeekly.com newsletter list for the latest and greatest fashion and beauty news!

Studs studs everywhere

No, I'm not talking about the men here in NYC.
The Mara Hoffman fashion show was riddled with studs. Studded shoes, studded leggings, even a studded bodice - I need to find out how much that weighs. Don't know how that tiny model stood upright.
Then there were the feather-fringed vests, wool fringe wrap sweaters, and cape coats.
I loved her collection and the flawless presentation. The hair was loose curls and waves. The eyes were colored with a turquoise shadow. The rest of the face was otherwise a beautiful natural look that no doubt took loads of makeup to create that effect :)

I wish I had time to give the scoop but I saw6 shows yesterday and am still spinning.
Herve Leger Fall09 collection is amazing and beautiful. I believe my mouth stayed in the dropped "OMG" position for most of that show.
Miss Sixty was over in a flash but was definitely high energy and fun.

I ran into my friend Carmella Spinelli, one of the master minds of SOHO119 in Kansas City. I am excited to get into the off-site showing of Luca Luca Fall 09 - the designer is one of her former students. That should be a fun time. Crazy meeting someone you know from KC here in the Big Apple.

Time to get ready. I slept in a bit thanks to the fabulous complimentary bar in the tents. Who knew I loved Chambord so much?
Off to Tracy Reese this afternoon and her after party tonight.
Have a beautiful day fashionistas!
