Salty Tips

I cannot tell you how many times, as a decent but rather clumsy gymnast and cheerleader, that I sprained my ankles and soaked in Epsom Salt. I had no idea it had any other purpose in life.
Recently I requested expert skin care tips and got some interesting ones from my old friend Epsom:

To exfoliate: Mix 2 cups of Epsom Salt with 1/4 cup of petroleum jelly and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Use the mixture to gently scrub away dry skin patches, leaving skin silky smooth.

To heal dry lips: Mix a few tablespoons of Epsom Salt with a teaspoon of petroleum jelly, apply to lips and rub lightly. This will gently scrub away dry skins on lips, and it will also help lipstick last longer and give lips instant plump.

For a gentle facial: Mix 1/2 TSP of Epsom Salt into cleansing cream for a deep-pore cleansing. Massage on skin. Rinse with cool water. Pat dry.

For a relaxing soak: Add two cups of Epsom Salt to the water in a standard-sized bathtub; soak for at least 12 minutes, three times weekly. For an extra treat, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil for a refreshing scent.

Winter Skin Tips from CVS

CVS/pharmacy carries beauty supplies at affordable prices – and remember, CVS/pharmacy offers a 100% money back guarantee on all beauty and CVS Brand items (even opened!).

1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize: Generous application of lotion and moisturizers is essential to keeping your skin healthy during the dry winter months. Use a heavy lotion aimed at extra-dry skin to help trap moisture in – make sure you buy one that’s non-comedogenic so you won’t have that heavy feeling afterwards. CVS/pharmacy Vitamin E Plus Moisturizing Cream has cocoa butter and antioxidant vitamins A, D, and E.

2. Nice and Easy: Be sure to exfoliate skin, but do so gently! If your skin is dray, tight, and flakey, it means you have a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Scrub those away with a gentle exfoliator (stay away from sea-salt and harsh scrubs), and follow with a soothing moisturizer. Try the CVS/pharmacy Luminous Daily Scrub with soy extracts.

3. Veggie Power: Skin makes less oil in the winter; a great treatment for dryness is Carrot Seed Oil (Daucus Carota Sativa), which is rich in beta-carotene as well as vitamins B, C, D and E. It’s most useful as a skin rejuvenator; it stimulates cell growth and improves the complexion of the skin, due to its strengthening effect on red blood cells, while toning the skin and increasing elasticity and firmness. A great way to get the benefits of Carrot Seed Oil is with CVS/pharmacy Brand Soft Skin Spray.

4. Think Tropical: A small humidifier can make a world of difference – it not only keeps skin happier, but also perks up plants and banishes static cling.

5. Snow Angel: Don’t forget the sunscreen – even though it’s not warm out, skin can still be damaged – especially if there’s snow on the ground. For your face (which may be the only skin uncovered!) use CVS/pharmacy Brand Oil Free Faces sunscreen – developed specially for faces, the light formula won’t clog pores or cause irritation. Protect lips, too, with a lip product containing SPF, like Chap-Block Lip Balm Ultra-30 from CVS/pharmacy.

Give me a break

Ok, seriously? Ed Hardy Cabernet? As if the tatoo shirts, hats and even horse tack are not enough, you have to put it on a wine bottle? That's just weird.
Kudos to my hubby who thought this would be of interest to me and my fashionistas.

So...it's 9:45 a.m. and now I'm curious. Pour the intern and I a small tasting. She skipped the smelling just now and I think may have downed it (you go girl). If I just graduated after a week of campaign class project hell, I'd be drinking out of the bottle.

I'm smelling. Hmmm...nothing fab popping out. Strong alcohol smell and some fruit, I think. glug glug...
EEW! Maybe because I've had two cups of strong coffee but this tastes BAD. I will note that it is French and I don't prefer that...but still. blech.
Curious as to what the H were they thinking...I visit the web site and find an array of beverages. Hmmmm....well. I guess if people finally get tired of the clothing you've got a fall back?
Let us know if you've tried and liked. We're happy to give comments from the other side of the tatoo shirt ;)

3 for $30 deal at Body Shop

One of my favorite things in the world is shea butter. I used to have my own line of products before Haute Market and Haute Weekly took over my life :) It was all shea butter base.
Keep in mind that shea butter feels a bit greasy at first because it's a BUTTER. But it should soak in and leave your skin so smoothe.

One of my sponsors just sent me a great online-only sale deal that I wanted to share with you.
GREAT stocking stuffers!

Today Only! 3 for $30 Body Butter at The Body Shop. Shop now

Ranting and returning

Today, for the first time ever, I returned makeup to the store. Usually I'll just chalk it up to a poor choice and toss it out. Not this time.

First of all, I bought this new mascara because it was supposed to be on sale. I didn't realize until returning home that I paid full price.
So I planned to return to the store and find out what the deal was on not getting my deal.
But yesterday I got desperate. Sick and sickly looking I did one last check in the review mirror on the way to a meeting and, ACK - no mascara. Not good for an already pasty face.

There was my No-deal mascara sitting next to me in the passenger seat. Should I open it? Should I stop and buy mascara on the way that I normally use? "Screw it" I said to myself and the mascara as I ripped open the packaging.

Now, being the smart non-blonde that I am, it took me a few cuss words and minutes to figure out how to open it. For some reason this futuristic container threw me.
I applied the first coat for priming. Ok. That's fine.

Never before have I put on makeup and said "WTF" outloud, to myself. But that was the conversation I had with me, myself and I as I looked at this mascara wand. Seriously? THIS is going to volumize my lashes?
All it did was make a clumpy mess and did nothing for lengthening.
I was ticked.
So today, I finally returned to the store to get my $14.51 back and bought some Dr. Pepper with it instead.
I will stick with my curved brushes with loads of lovely bristles.

New Garment District Boutique

Kansas City, much to the surprise of many, has a Garment District museum. Now, just down the street, will be a collective of designers and boutiques joining under the umbrella of the new Garment District boutique in downtown Kansas City.

Seven local boutiques and designers have already signed on the dotted line to be the first in this unique boutique. Each will have their own space which surrounds a chic bar area.

Of course we Haute fashioninstas knew about this AGES ago as we recommended Rachel for the gig with Cordish and watched her talents go to work to help them get this concept off the ground and brought to reality. :) We even peeked at the space a few months ago when it didn't even have a floor. But it was easy to understand the vision of what this shell would become.

“As the owner of Urbantique, also as someone who has worked closely with a number of the other tenants participating in the Garment District, I can say that we are all very excited to bring our concepts to Kansas City’s downtown. We have been watching the Power & Light District grow over the past two years as our own stores and concepts have grown and think that the marriage of our hard-earned clienteles and the Power & Light District’s tremendous foot traffic is going to be a great thing for everyone involved. We can’t wait to start outfitting downtown Kansas City!” comments Ms. Rachel Pheffer, owner of Urbantique.

The boutique is said to open in March 2010. This has been one of many proposed opening dates and we sincerely hope it's the "one". How will a boutique survive downtown in this economy? It's hard to say. But some of the smartest and most talented boutique owners in KC are in on the deal and they have continued to grow their businesses despite supposed economic crises. (Of course most of them have been Haute Market vendors as well so we think that makes them fab!)

Many people work downtown and have had no where to go for their lunch breaks, besides...well, lunch. This is something that will definitely bring them out into the brisk KC weather and into a little bit of fashion paradise.

If you want to catch the press conference it's at 11:30 at the shops location at about 13th & Main. Give a shout out to Haute Weekly's models who will be showing off looks from a few of the participating boutiques.
