Stunt Lashes

It seems that I could theme the entire first quarter of 2008 to lashes because I've tried so many formulas and have so many more to play with. The last few days I've been testing what LORAC dubs it's "new breakthrough mascara", Publicity Stunt Lashes Long-Wearing Mascara. Yeah, that's a mouthful.

What it is: Long wearing mascara.

What it claims to do: create long, lush lashes that are gym-proof, cry-proof and Red Carpet beauty-proof. It's ultra lightweight formula is loaded with natural ingredients that create a long-wearing, innovative new technology, allowing you to take a break from re-applying your mascara every day without it smudging, budging or flaking for up to 3 days.

How do they do that?: the formula includes a plant cellulose that is combined with volcanic ash from an island chain in the South Pacific. The pulverized ash mixed with the cellulose and other ingredients produces a water impervious substance that bonds to hair, elongating the lash and increasing the wear due to it's water-repelling qualities.

The product (which costs $18 online at Sephora) comes with a handy instruction guide for applying and removing the mascara. Starting at the base of the lashes, wiggle the brush back and forth and up to the tips of the lashes. It's recommended that you apply at least two coats, which I did.
I found that the formula was so light-weight that it was difficult to get a lot of coverage. It took a long time to achieve what I thought was a good coverage for my lashes.
Next, while lashes are still wet, use the attached lash comb. This tool was helpful in separating the lashes but it was difficult to comb the lashes at either end of my lid due to the shape of the comb.

I applied this on Sunday. The first night I slept with this on, I woke with some crazy lashes. I know that I should sleep on my back but I often sleep front down which means part of my face is mashed into my pillow. Not good for preventing face lines or for long-wearing mascara.
I had some bits of the mascara still on this morning. Washing it off was no simple task. The instructions do let you know that if you want to remove on day 1, you'll need oil make up remover and warm water. If removal is done on day 2, apply warm water to the lashes with a cloth and make downward strokes.

I tried a non-oil make up remover just to see what day 3 would hold. The lashes held. I eventually removed all of the product per the instructions.

My recommendation: there are a lot of great mascaras that last long enough for me. This 3 day stuff is not for me. I don't want to worry that the lashes have bent and stuck that way. I want it to come off when I want it off. I think this does what it says, but is a bit extreme. I don't know anyone that needs mascara to last 3 days. I got this product for free in my goodie bag from last week's NYC beauty event...had I paid $18, I'd be taking it back to the store.

Penelope

Goodie Bag holders from the last Haute Market event were treated to a complimentary screening pass to the new movie Penelope before it was out in theaters. I have not had the chance to see the movie but did a little snooping around to see how it is doing. Not as well as a prior fairytale-type movie, by far.

Opening weekend for Penelope was a dismal 4 million, compared to Enchanted which opened at Thanksgiving and pulled in a whopping 34 million.
I'm more likely to see Penelope than Enchanted mainly because Reese Witherspoon and Christina Ricci are some of my favorite young female actresses, and because I had enough of Disney fairy tales to last a lifetime.

The moral to the story of Penelope is that inner beauty is more important than outer beauty. Yeah...that's true in the real world..HA! While it's true that young girls should be encouraged to find what's beautiful within themselves and build upon that...you know damn good and well that if you gave birth to a child a pig nose, you'd be consulting the plastic surgeon before you were decently dressed or ran a comb through your hair. Which, I believe that the story does include such a consult, but the doctors say the nose job isn't possible. Obviously or there would be no story.

Penelope is a sweet fable with some actors that I consider fun to watch. Plus it's an underdog at the box office and I like to support the underdog when I can.

Where Do You Keep Your Money?

Start saving your pennies now because there are so many fabulous fashions coming this fall that not getting at least one will leave you feeling sad and alone.
I've been browsing pictures of Stella McCartney's Fall 08 line and I just have to have the felted wool wrap coat. I don't even want to know what it costs. I just want to hand over my credit card and what will be, will be.
Of course I can't wear it much because anyplace you go out in this city people think they need to smoke! ARGH! What is it with this metro area? Can we please just go smoke free like the cosmopolitan cities so that we can actually WEAR our fashionable frocks and designer doo-dads? why do you think the men and women of places like NYC always look so good? They can safely wear their goods.
Thankfully, down here in the 'burbs, I no longer have to request non-smoking sections in which to enjoy my meals. But every time I leave my little haven to cross the border and venture downtown, I have to carefully chose my outfit, not so I can look as chic as possible, so that I can look chic in one of my B or C list outfits that I won't be in tears over if it's forever carrying the stench of second hand smoke.
Whew...I feel better with that soap-box-moment having been said and done.
For now, I follow the lead of Ms. Carrie Bradshaw, for I like my money right where I can see it, hanging in my closet.

Playing Dress Up

I used to be the ultimate tomboy. I used to race my banana-seat bike against the neighbor boys on their dirt bikes, use a slanted tree stump as our ramp and still have the scar on my chin from wiping out in the middle of the street after using said tree stump. I'm sure that I wore dresses as a little girl, but I don't recall that and I'm guessing that I fought it a bit.
Maybe it's because I now live in an all male household that I'm asserting my independence and embracing my girliness. Whatever the reason would be (I find that wine is a better option than sorting all that out with a shrink) I now love dresses, dressing up and even looking feminine!

As I review the Spring 2008 fashion shows held last September in New York, I see oodles of dresses. This carried over to the Fall 08 shows as well. There were a surprising number of light, flowy dresses that can also be expected for this fall.

What can you expect and search for now? It's almost easier to tell you what not to wear because there are so many new ideas out there, and definitely some old things that need discarded.
No more shapeless women walking around town please! The tunic dress is done. The only way to salvage it if you have one is to find a way to belt it. Shape and fit are in. There is room for a lot of individual style, but the common element is that it's shaped to fit a female body and show some curves.

Bill Blass showed a collection of dresses that either stopped just below the knee, or went to the floor. Everyone of them showed off the waistline.
While Anne Klein has several looks showing off the knees as well as the waistline.
Even Betsey Johnson, with her flouncy skirts and bright colors, showed the waistline and were even accentuated with a wide sash.

I suppose that brings me back to the one fashion tip I always harp on...fit is it! Show your curves. If you're not very curvy, use a belt to accentuate the waist and give yourself some shape.

Score My Swag

Hopefully you're an avid reader of the Fashion 411 Blog here at Haute Market. It might help you win some fabulous swag I brought back from my trip last week to a huge beauty product event in New York. I cannot possibly try all of these products, especially since it can take 4-6 weeks to truly see results of anti-wrinkle creams, acne treatment gels, face scrubs, etc.

One product I tried and loved is the Dr. Michelle Copeland Ageless Skin Foundation. Recognize that name? If you scored a goodie bag at the Feb. 10th event, then you received some products from the doc too.

I was surprised that the light feeling foundation worked for me because my skin seems resilient to keeping foundation in place. It's as if it evaporates away. I usually use a very thick foundation. I'm alternating primers to see which works best for me. One is the Smashbox primer which has a thicker consistency due to it's silicone base. The other is Lorac which feels more like water, but in a good way.

Let's back up and I'll give you the complete regime. Normally I'd never do this much...but I'm not getting younger and it's here for the testing.

Face wash - Mary Kay Velocity. My skin tends to dry so after a while I have to use something without the scrubbing beads inside, just for a few days.
Next I'm experimenting with another swag item: Lancome Absolue Ultimate, replenishing and restructuring serum.
Next, La Roche-Posay Biomedic Facial Shield for moisturizing.
I let this all sit a while before I put on make up.
Next is the primer, either Smashbox or Lorac until I determine which helps my foundation stay on longer.
Foundation by Copeland.
I have bronzer and highlighter powder from Lorac that I'll use if going out.
Finishing powder is whatever I can find. I honestly have so many and need to pay attention because that can make a difference in staying-power too.

So now you have my regime. And last week I posted some faves of some of our fashionistas. You should have plenty of recommendations for your next shopping trip!

Oscar and his Ladies

The ladies of Oscar night must have been planning these gowns for months in anticipation of this grand Hollywood ceremony.
My favorite is a tie between Jessica Alba and Penelope Cruz.
Jessica (glowing mother-to-be) in her merlot-colored Marchesa gown. The gorgeous feather bustline and demi-train gave her a goddess quality. All that was missing - a few cascading curls falling from her beautiful up-do hair style.

Penelope Cruz, also following the feather trend looked incredible in her gown. What I really loved was the way the back of her hair fell just to the top of the gown's back. Like it was cut "just so" to start the flowing look at the top of her head down to the end of her amazing train.

Obviously the weather wasn't cooperating (a tent was erected to keep the arriving stars dry) and the many buns and other up-do's were probably a result of that, and that is the easy way out. The few who let their hair down, literally, had a much tougher job of achieving the soft hair look. Kudos to the loose-haired ladies!

A quick glance at other blogs and I find a lot of people bagging on the feather dresses. I love them. Especially after seeing the Fall 08 Fashion Week runway shows. There were feathers here and there.

I swear that ULTA must plan their mailer for my Fab Friday chats. It always arrives just in time. ULTA has a free gift with purchase offer in the store, several buy two get one free products and sales. Check it out on this cold, cold Friday.

I'm still exhausted from my quickie with the big apple. And still pouting about not getting to shop. What was most agonizing is the cab ride down Madison Avenue. Passing all those fabulous designer boutiuqes at 9:01pm....it was killer.
But the huge goodie bag was so fantastic and provided me with dozens of products to review and share with my fashionistas! So keep an eye out for upcoming product test reviews and some contests to win some of my swag!

Good morning from NYC, again...

Hello fashionistas and good morning. It's 6am here in the fashion capital. I arrived last night at dusk, and I'm leaving when it's still dark. This is not a life I would want to live. Oh well...New York is most beautiful at night.
With no time to shop except running into a TJ Max to buy another piece of luggage, I feel like quite the jet-setter.
Why the extra piece of luggage then? Last night was the demo night for the CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) Network, and that means a HUGE goodie bag packed so tight with beauty products. I had to buy luggage to check all the lotions, perfumes, and other goodies.

Demo night is an evening in which all the fabulous brands we know, plus some newbies to the market, come together to show off their latest and greatest products so that we'll vote for them as the best in their categories.

Some women think Haute Market events are crowded. Holy cow. This was only two hours long, the aisles were about 5-6 feet wide, and tables for the demos were side by side as far as the eye could see. I didn't make it to 2/3's of the demo tables but I did score some fantastic freebies and great contacts in the industry. This means more fabulous swag for Haute Market goodie bags in the future! (don't you love the balloon wall?!)

And now for another installment of the bare necessities women we know use before heading out the door each day:

Bare Necessities

I am a bit tardy posting today. So sorry. I was sure I could get dressed, get kids out the door, pack and have plenty of playtime. Wrong. I'm sitting here at our beloved KCI watiting to fly to NYC for a fabulous beauty-industry event. I'll get to sample new products on the market and even bring home a great goodie bag!
In honor of my beauty-related day, I'm posting the bare essentials that many area women use for their beauty regime.
Some make me laugh because they aren't very bare. You're lucky to see me at Walmart or Target with foundation and mascara on my usual days. :)

Eye Candy

I thought I'd get the week off to a great start with a little bit of eye candy.
Fashion Week was only a few weeks ago but the fashion world seems to have already moved on. Not me, I'm still reeling.
Little did I know, as I was crashing the R. Scott French show and making my way to the front row, that I'd be treated not only to some interesting menswear designs, but the boys of Make Me A Supermodel. Not to mention that I was sitting across the catwalk from Niki Taylor and Tyson Beckford. It was smokin' hot in that room baby!

Fab Friday

It is always so difficult to choose what to write about. The fashion and beauty industries move so quickly that it's difficult to keep up. That is what you have Haute Market for! Too keep you in the loop.

I've been expirimenting with other mascaras and Rimmel still comes out on top.
My recent go around was with L'Oreal's Telescopic mascara. The wand has a four sided comb for maximum lash grabbing. It does a fabulous job of coverage, however the wand is too long for me and it's too flexible. I like a stiff comb for preciseness. This one has too much give for when I'm trying to apply, so as I apply pressure, it bends. This was especially traumatic when I went to put the wand back in the container and I missed the opening so it bent. Now my comb is curved a bit - not in a way that helps application. So while the actual mascara itself looks fantastic on my lashes and did help lengthen the look, the applicator makes it too tedious to mess with for me. Rimmel Lash Maxxx is still on top of my lash bash list.

Happy Hearts Day!

Some of you love this day. It's full of love, kisses and romance. Lucky duck.
I suppose that some of you also dread this day. The wizardry of commercialism has worked it's magic to make you think that if you don't have a day filled with romance that there is something wrong.
I think it's a load of crap, but that doesn't keep me from expecting something romantic anyway. :)
Valentine's Day should be just for lovers. In our house we don't get and give Valentines to the kids, the neighbor, the delivery man. It helps that we have all boys I suppose. My husband simply forbids that the boys give out Valentines for fear that it will compromise their masculenity.
My clever love told me he "found some romance", then handed over a gift box of Ralph Lauren Romance perfumes. Silly and smart, that one is.
I still have to make a mad dash to get his gift. I had a sweet card but when re-reading it this morning before signing it, I realized it was for someone shacking up. Nice huh? "I love living with you because....". So now they even have cards for those 'living in sin' as grandma would say. How lovely.
So I scrapped the card and am heading out to brave the men of KC who wait until the last minute to show their affection.

The After Math

Good morning fashionistas. Which of you forgot to turn the heat up last night? It's COLD outside! I just want to curl back up under the covers and hide from my household duties I've neglected due to the Haute Market frenzy. My place is always a wreck when I come home and toss everything inside after an event.


Today is one where I wish I was back in New York where I could take my laundry to the woman across the street and it would be finished and folded for me when I picked it up. Where the taxi picks me up outside the front door and it's already warmed up inside. However....we do have a darn good metro area here in KC and we are pretty fortunate.

A lot of great things happen in this metro area and soon Haute Market will help make it more easy to find out about what'd going on. Keep checking the blog each week day for events, fashion and beauty tips, and even a few contests once in a while!

Long Haute Hangover

Whew...that shopping party on Sunday was intense! The place was packed and there was some serious shopping going on. So today, I'm still suffering from the Haute Market Hangover. It has nothing to do with alcohol, though I had a few sips (or twelve) to help endure my high-heeled boots a few more hours. :)

Fun Sunday

Wow. I am soooo tired today. Yesterday's Haute Market shopping event made for a wild and crazy Sunday afternoon. The Ritz Charles was jam packed with frenzied fashionistas grabbing great deals all around. Most of the designers and boutiques were offering huge discounts...clothing 15-60% off in some booths! Ladies left with gorgeous jewelry, fabulous home decor items and so much more!

Haute TV

Good snowy morning fashionistas! I hope you're all snuggly warm inside the house today.
I have to venture out very early today to be on FOX4 TV. It took me 1 hour and 15 minutes to get from my house to downtown, usually takes me 25 minutes. The snow is deep and the roads are trecherous in Kansas City.

The treck was worth it to be interviewed again by Laura Thornquist. She is a fabulous fashionista! I'll post a link to the segment as soon as they have it online. For now, here are a few of the pieces I showed today.

The topic was about finding great "key pieces" for your wardrobe during the end-of-season sales, getting a good fit, and making them last through several seasons.

Fit is important, especially in pants. Pay a little to get a good alteration done if needed. It's so worth it. I have to alter almost every pair of pants or jeans I buy, so I search the sales in order to save a little, then put that savings towards the altering.

Once you acquire several great pair of well-fitted pants, you can wear them throughout the year. In spring wear a tank-style top with empire waist like this one I found at Macy's. For winter you can use a great jacket like this one I found at Lord & Taylor while in NYC last weekend.

With the weather we're having, I have no problem spending money on some great jackets and coats. The one I used on tv today I bought from Frankie & Jules, a Haute Market vendor. If she has any left she says she will have them on sale this Sunday at Haute Market.

Look now for styles that are more classic, less trendy, so that they will carry through the next season or two. Clean lines, solid colors and a great fit.

Fashion Week Buzz

I'm back from New York Fashion Week with loads of photos and video of the shows, the celebrities and the fab fashion forecast. It was such a treat to be among such fabulous fashion guru's and I can't wait to see all the Fall 08 fashions in the stores. Unfortunately that's a season away, but you can still enjoy the upcoming trends now.

Belts were definitely a common theme among the designers. The BCBGMAXAZRIA collection was all belted, not to mention beautifully feminine with it's soft flowing silk fabrics and muted jewel tone colors, plus lots of dresses and skirts. I love the bubble skirts with a peek-a-boo layer underneath of a brighter color. One outfit had a beige tone with a pink layer under. Very fun!
Many of the pieces featured layered ruffles. I know...it sounds crazy, but with such a soft fabric like silk, it laid well and looked fantastic!
It was a packed house as we all sat in anticipation of another successful show from the amazing Max. He definitely lived up to the expectations!

Good Morning Kansas City!

It's my last day in NYC. There are a few more fashion shows before I have to catch a plane. I'm getting a late start due to a sleepless night. New Yorkers are pretty excited about the Super Bowl win and they were not quiet about it. It was so much fun to watch everyone spill out onto the streets, chanting, clapping and carrying on. At least 4 firetrucks passed down our street with lights blazing and horns honking. It was thrilling to be a part of this celebration but I'm raedy to get back to the girly business of fashion!

For now I have to get my Starbucks and hustle down to Bryant Park. Ciao!

Fashion Friday

Hello fashionista's. This is your KC Fashionista writing from NYC! Right now New York is wet, wet, wet. But not even a little rain can deter me from my goal of getting into some fab fashion shows.

The most amazing show this morning was opened by non other than Mrs. Laura Bush! I'd seen her on tv this morning promoting heart disease awareness for women. You've surely seen the little red dress logos.
I was thinking to myself as I waited for the Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection, that it would be so cool if Laura Bush was there. Well...she was. And showing off the beautiful red dresses were loads of fabulous female stars.

The audience gasped and cheered as each woman strutted down the aisle. Allison Janney is one of my favorites from the hit series, The West Wing. She was amazingly elegant in a fitted red gown by Donna Karan.
Sara Rimirez, Dr. Callie Torres on Grey's Anatomy, looked like a bombshell in her Angel Sanchez gown and my did she strut her stuff!
It was so amazing to see these women in a different light, having a fun time rocking the runway. It was absolutely something you'd expect of New York.
But I never expected Liza Minnelli to float down the runway and I most certainly did not ever dream I would see and hear her LIVE, singing New York, New York. What a treat!

Techie Travel Buddies

Two things I cannot live without, whether I leave home for two days, to take kids to school, or travel from the kitchen to the bedroom...I have to have technology by my side. Of my last two techie purchases, only one is a bit chic. The other is totally utilitarian - a necessary evil.

The chic gadget is my fab new laptop. I originally wanted the pink Sony Viao but decided against it because guys would laugh at it (not good for professional meetings) and the speakers were so crappy (not good for blasting my new Daughtry CD).

I went with the HP Special Addition white laptop and am starting to love it, now that I'm used to Vista and the latest Microsoft Office product versions. It's sleek and light...oh, and it works. More than I can say for my old laptop. So that's a big plus.

My boring to look at but completely necessary device is the Sprint Mogul phone I picked up yesterday. So often I'd be out and about, but not have my contacts with me when I needed to make a call. Now I have more with me that I can fit into my simple little head, or my mini-van. This phone/PDA has email, text messages, internet, and a host of other things I'll probably never use but have very cute little icons for.

I love that this phone has a slide out keyboard plus touch-screen. Not sure how to make it all work, but it's fun to play with. No, I don't really understand how to make a phone call unless it's to someone in my contact list, but I can get online and google it! It probably wouldn't be such a boring gadget if I had the patience to learn how to work all the bells and whistles. At least I've figured out how to call home...I just speak "phone home" and it works! I wish my kids listened as well as my new phone. I'll have to talk to the Sprint guys about that option.


These gadgets and a few other items will go on my handy new Samsonite Spinner carry-on bag which doubles at a laptop bag. It's wonderful in so many ways. The handle is versitile, so either a short or tall person can adjust it to the right height. The laptop compartment is padded and has a few extra pockets for computer-ish things. Great for an extra change of clothes, the computer, camera and a few toiletries. Love it!

Speaking of carry-on...I have to carry on and get moving. My flight leaves later today and I've got to get last minute items packed.

Is the event really for 21 and over?
Uh...yeah. That's why it says that all over the site and on the tickets.
The events have several cash bars, hence no kiddo's allowed. Not to mention that this fun day out is so we can get AWAY from the kids...not to pay $10 to hang out with someone else's kids.

What is in the goodie bag?
First of all, the bag itself is awesome and worth the $10. It's our oversized tote bag with long shoulder strap and zipper to keep you goods inside. Great for the gym or the pool.

Travel Buddies

There are many things I can do without. But there are a few things I won't leave the house without having in my bag. Especially on my upcoming trip to NYC this week.

First on my list of "to-do's" today is to get to Nordstrom's for a pair of those miracle undergarments, Spanx. I have a fabulous INC knit dress to wear out to dinner and to see the Broadway show, Chicago. I can't get caught with a bulging tummy at dinner time, or panty lines in the waiting line. Spanx are the modern version of the hideous girdle. I have never tried them but have only heard fantastic things about their shaping and smoothing abilities.

In my handbag you'll always find my Lano Lip balm and my jennyLou Spa body butter. I won't go anywhere without them. Especially on a windy and dry Midwest day. The Fab Feet gift set will be a wonderful treat for my tired feet after a long day of 5th Ave. shopping!

Fresh Perspective

Without getting too deep and introspective, I want to take a moment to step back and be even more candid than I usually am. (scary, huh?)
All this stuff about fashion, beauty and such...is a bit superficial. Obviously you and I have bigger fish to fry most days that which lipstick will stay on, or who has the most fresh new style coming for spring. I want you to know that I realize that and appreciate the fact that we are all busy, stressed and some days, completely maxed out on patience.

Haute Market is here to provide relief and a fun outlet for those days when you just need to think about something else besides how you'll get all the kids to their respective sports practices, or how you can possibly make happy a boss who will never be pleased.

When you need a change of pace or something to distract you for a moment, I want the Fashion 411 to be a place you'll visit. When you've been neglecting to get together with your girl friends and need their laughter near you, I hope you'll all come to the shopping parties for some levity. A ten minute massage or a quick make-up touch-up can do wonders!

It took a major family emergency for me to slow down and step back and I missed posting last Friday's blog because of it. But I found myself craving this levity, this distraction from "real" life. So I hope you realize that my life does not revolve around fashion and beauty, but this is my job and I love it. No Bull About Botox

Good morning fashionistas!
For many of us, it's not easy to be beautiful. Goodness knows I put on a good effort some days and still don't see it. I think at best, I get called "cute". Hmmm....thanks.
Tell a woman she looks great, slim, happy...but not cute!

This week I'm shedding the veil of secrecy about what some consider 'vanity treatments'.
If you haven't had any, you've thought about it. If you've had some treatments, you want more. I thought, had, want. I'm coming clean about it so you can have the scoop.

In my effort to look less like a cranky b---h, I threw in the towel about my scowl lines and went to Aestheticare for Botox a while back. My first treatment had a great result and my appointment turned out to be a funny story I'll share for ages. (Read the original post here).

My first Botox treatment was last September. I was amazed. Botox doesn't erase those two lines between your brows, but for me it certainly helped lessen the creases and prevented me from further furrowing. Sometime in the last few weeks I noticed it had worn off, which they tell you it will after about 3 months. I had another treatment about a week ago and can definitely see the difference. I'm now perpetually un-furrowed. No matter how angry I get at my boys they don't seem to be taking me too seriously because I don't look like the angry witch.

Botox isn't cheap. It's priced per cc that they inject. So it depends on how much they use, how many locations you want treated. For my scowl between the brows it was just under $300. If it lasts three months then we're talking about an investment of $100 per month. Not such a bad deal if you consider that many of you probably spend that on coffee and crappy drive thru food, which does nothing for your complexion.

I'm not good at tolerating pain. For me, Botox was almost painless. This last treatment there was one poke that gave me a start and bothered me for about 3 seconds. The rest was just like a quick pinch, if that.

Will I do Botox again? Probably. But not for a while. Maybe a treatment or two each year. Right now I'd rather spend on the laser hair removal and hopefully soon try the treatments to start fading my sun spots from years of no sunscreen as a kid.

Hairy Bear

Let's face it...it's ridiculously cold outside. You're wearing big flannel pj's to bed. Chances are that your legs are hibernating and growing hairier by the day. You too? It's not that we're lazy, it's just that in the grand scheme of things, shaving takes way more time than it's worth at the moment. My legs don't plan to see the light of day until the groundhog pops his head up, so why waste all that precious hot water shaving?

Laser hair removal is the answer. I hope to get to my legs eventually. Right now I'm having my underarms treated at Aestheticare. So far, so good.
Funny story....
My friend is going for her first underarm treatment today. She called last night and asked me if she needed to shave. When I said "yes", she sounded slightly disappointed. The silly girl had been letting the hair grow because she thought it was like being waxed. Her poor husband! :)
Yes, you must shave prior to having laser hair removal. Most places will do that for you, but charge extra.

What does it feel like? It's very tolerable. This from a gal who asks for an epidural for a stubbed toe. It's a quick snap, similar to a rubber band. And for that second, it's hot. Then the tool they use immediately gets super cool.
To do both arms usually takes under 15 minutes.
After my first treatment I noticed a huge difference. Less hair. Results are different for everyone, but I can say that it's working great for me and I'll continue until underarm shaving is a thing of the past for me!

Techie Fashion

I am so annoyed that someone didn't tell me about these new computer styles a few days ago. Instead, two days AFTER I bought my new laptop, I learn that I could get one shaped like a handbag AND with a faux cow fur design. Wow...uh huh...that's a fashion statement all right. Not sure what that statement would be, but it's saying something. ha ha!

I think I'll stick with my boring rectangle laptop with the peculiar design on the outside. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be, but I like the pearl color and so far it works. Which is more than I can say for the most recently dismissed laptop that will mostly now be used for my monsters obsessed with Webkinz. That's a grand and some change put to good use, huh?

Kit Auf'd

Project Runway fans hissed, boo'd and said goodbye to a definite favorite last night. Kit failed the avant-garde challenge and had to pack her things.

What exactly is avant-garde? A French word meaning "front guard" basically referring to pushing the envelope. Doing something that is innovative, maybe even a bit over-the-top.

So in all honestly, Kit's design was not that innovative or over-the-top, but she did try to stay true to the challenge of basing a look off her models hair, she just missed the mark. I thought some amazing ruffled skirt paired with a corset would have been more in line with her models hair.

Why is it that the cute blonde girls get auf'd so soon when they truly have vision and talent? Versus the cry baby types who stay on, most surely because it makes for better TV.
I believe that Kit will, like Alison, go on to design beautiful clothes that women love, and be successful designers. I certainly hope so, anyway.

I'm sad that I'll be missing the Project Runway finale as my NY trip doesn't take me thru the entire 8 day fashion marathon. Maybe if I get an invite I'll shoot back there just for the show. I just can hardly wait to see who the final 3 will be!

Top It Off

On my quest for clothes chic enough for Fashion Week I had to head to the Country Club Plaza to hit some of the designers' boutiques. Who can't love BCBGMAXAZRIA? Max Azria knows what women want, thanks to his muse and beautiful wife. This particular line is chic and wearable.

I specifically loved this top, BCBG Faille Top, because even on the rack I could tell that it would be great for traipsing around the city streets of all day, then be dressy enough for dinner and drinks later....or perhaps the big fashion party should that invitation ever show up.

When on my Plaza excursion I was wearing my skinny jeans and new Mudd boots. The girls in the store loved my boots and the boots actually worked with this top as a great day outfit. I plan to have a pair of chic, strappy shoes to put on for evening activities. I guess I should get on the horn and make sure Max knows where Kansas is so he can send my invitation. ;)

If I get into no other tent, I will be happy so long as I get to see Max's new line and the master himself. Don't get me wrong...I love many of the other designers showing at Fashion Week, but a lot of them are not so attainable for me or my budget.

Give It The Boot

I searched high and low for a great boot that was comfortable for walking many city blocks, but somewhat chic looking. By high and low I mean north and south, expensive and cheap. None of the nicer department stores had anything that fit the bill. The closest I found was a pair of designer boots that I had to wait about 20 minutes for someone to tell me that they didn't have it in my size. Since it would have cost about 3 Ben Franklin's, I suppose I got off lucky considering my later find.

I would have never entertained shopping at the discount shoe place for my NYC walking boots. I thought surely I'd have to spend, spend, spend. However, since I had to go to ULTA last week for my lip color review materials, I thought I'd peek in the Off Broadway store. There was not an impressive selection in my opinion, save the single pair of boots that I thought I might just get by with.

Besides chic, I had but two requirements: Warm? Yep. Comfortable? Yes, and even with a heel! Can you believe it? A pair of MUDD boots at the discount place (on sale for about $45) and now everyone asks me where I found my cute boots. I guess that maybe if I say "oh...Off Broadway", that maybe people will think I mean the street, not the store. :)

So...although I wanted these Marc Jacobs boots (no chance at $1100+) I was reminded of my own lesson that sometimes we have to deal with what we're given. High fashion isn't readily available in my area, so I have to show that a cute outfit can be put together without spending a fortune. Check back tomorrow and see my splurge item!

Flat Globe

It's very sad that the Golden Globe winners didn't get their full ceremony. Think of those who won their first and didn't even get to have the full-on presentation. Instead there was a boring press conference, no starlets with flowing gowns and sparkling gems.
Also sad is that I haven't seen any of the winning movies or shows. Not even Ratatouille.

Hopefully the strike will be resolved and things will run as planned for the Academy Awards. Oscar will probably march off his pedestal and have a hissy fit in the middle of Hollywood if he doesn't get his air-time.

Lips that Schtick

Next on the list of long-wear lip colors put to the test is Almay's Truly LastingTM Color.
I tried the roseberry color and it wasn't the best choice for me. It urned out lighter than I thought it would, especially once the gloss was applied.

Again we're dealing with this spongy applicator for the color. It seems to put more on the edge of my lips and less in the “thick of it”. So, again, precise application is a must. But even more so with this product because it lasts and lasts...so long that the energizer bunny is fast asleep before you can think of getting this color off your lips. That might seem like a great idea, but not if the color you pick isn't right for you. I didn't like this because it lasted too long. I know, I know...that's their point. But it was a bit worrisome to be using make up remover on my lips, then a lip scrub, then after giving up, waking up with some of that color still on my lips!

So while the product did what it said, I think someone got a little carried away with the formula. It was a little gooey feeling. That added to the poor color choice on my part...it just wasn't a good lip day.

I'd probably try this in another color just to give it a fair chance, but I really don't care for the applicator and felt much more comfortable using the L'Oreal product reviewed yesterday.

I did try the ULTA version of the long-wear, but not for very long. The color was not good either (obviously I need some training in color choices) so I took it off early. Same spongy tip I don't care for, same stickiness as the others.

So it all comes down to user preference on this test. The products did all last for me much longer than regular lipstick. If that is your only goal, it's definitely worth the $10 or so for this long-wear color. If I had been busy all day and not purposely focusing on my lips, I may have ignored the stickiness. Now I'll know to go with a shade darker/deeper since the products with a gloss seemed to lighted on me once applied.

Overall, this was a good experience and hopefully gave you some tips for your future purchases. Definitely try a few different kinds. If you do, let me know your thoughts here on the Fashion 411 blog!

Pucker Up - More Lip Wars

Next on my list of lip colors that, hopefully, last...
L'Oreal - Endless Kissable, claiming on the box to be "anti-fading, satin colour."
Did it live up to the label? Keep reading...

The L'Oreal lipcolor, was much easier to apply than the others on my list due to it being more like a lip stick and not paint on a q-tip. The instructions said to NOT rub your lips together like I automatically do when applying typical lip stick. So I had to muster up some self control and wait for it to dry.
This product doesn't have a gloss included, which made it feel a little strange. It was sticky at first. I got used to it, though, and the product didn’t dry out on my lips like I thought it might not having a gloss.

The L'Oreal Endless Kissable did not come off on my coffee cup and lasted several hours! Hooray! After coffee, then lunch and 5 hrs of wear, it was fading a bit on the top lip, like yesterdays product, but still a major improvement from regular lip stick!
I even tested it out by planting several kisses on my littlest monster and he didn't run way with proof of the crime. What was even more cute was that he noticed my long-lasting color and said "mommy has lips".
I used raisin berry color and the color on the container was true to what I thought the color would be on my lips. Nice to have some consistency for something that stays with you all day.

Overall I'm happy with this L'Oreal lip product and will definitely be using it, not trashing it!

Lip Service

Products come and go, lipstick colors change with the seasons. What I'd like to stick is my lipsticks. So the quest for long-wearing lip color that actually wears longer than my first cup of coffee is on.

Let me preface with a little disclaimer. I did not get free samples. I bought the products I'm reviewing. These are my honest to goodness findings and opinions. I'm not endorsing anything...just chatting. Got it? Good.

First victim on the list. Revlon Colorstay, Overtime Lipcolor in Ultimate Wine.
This was my first time with this type of applicator and I plan to try this one again later this week just to give it a fair chance.
First, application with these wands is foreign to me. It's like a little sponge on the end of a small stick.
I find these tools difficult for precision. More color seems to go to the edge of the lip instead of an even coverage all over. This is not just Revlon's product, this is a repetitive difficulty for me with all these wand applicators.
So application is a bit tricky and you need to get it right the first time because as far as the long-wearing claims go, that's true...if you mess up it's going to be there a while. Especially if you put make up on in the car like I do.
Word to the wise....practice several times at home until you get the application right and you know you have the right color.
I did not choose the right color so spent a long day looking 'not quite right'.

After you've applied the color layer, you must let it dry for a few minutes. I waited about 5 minutes. It was still a bit sticky but went ahead and applied the gloss. The gloss, I was told by the Ulta employee, is added because these long-wear colors, much like stains, can be drying otherwise.

The Revlon product did last a long time. But overall, my virgin experience with this new-to-me product did not go well. However it did last a long time as they claim. I'd say it was a good 5 hours before I could see a bit of wear.

That title could be referring to the tote bag, or a few old friends...either way...

It's finally Friday and I feel a little slapstick silly. Holiday break is almost over and the kids go back to school Monday. Hoorah! I love my little monsters but we are all craving our regularly scheduled program.
A friend sent me a link to these silly bags that I must share.
A Stupid Bag.com is a funny little shop where you can purchase a cheap, reusable tote bag, with four sassy phrase choices. Some a little bolder than others. See for yourself and enjoy that some people still have a sense of humor for everyday living.

More On Bagging It

Another day on my quest for a chic laptop bag. I received several suggestions about finding the right bag. I should add that I am looking for something very sophisticated that won't send me out of an important meeting with my tail between my legs while laughed out of the room. I need a fab power bag fit for a simple sit down at Starbucks, or strolling the streets of Manhattan.

So I definitely had to check out what my Manhattan girlfriend suggested.

I don't really desire a bag that has been featured in so many magazines that it's common...but dang it if there aren't a few that perfectly fit the bill.
I might have to wait until I'm actually in Manhattan to buy one so that I can slip my laptop inside and make sure there is still room for all the other crap I schlep around.

I have my eye on the Sydney and the Debra styles. I really like the Sydney in houndstooth or black microsatin. Definitely chic geek, as they say. And definitely doesn't scream "I'm from the Midwest!" while I'm strolling Park Avenue.

Bag Report

I'm on the prowl for a laptop bag fit for a fashionista. I've had a practical (and cheap), black Nine West bag for ages and ages. I'm not sure which came first, the laptop or the bag. Yeah, it's that old.

The problem is that you can't just go grab a computer and a chic bag in the same spot. As much as I've hated researching prospects for my new digital wonder, I'm enjoying this bag search because it's about as adventurous as searching for the lost arc. I expect Harrison Ford to pop up on my screen at any moment, cracking his whip and urging me on my way to glory.

(Ok, maybe that's a bit embellished, even for me. Just trying to create some excitement here.)

First on my list to investigate in person is the McKlein Glen Ellyn Rolling 2-in-1 convertible tote. It's at Macy's, so (darn it) I have to go there again this week. The bag has great reviews online, but I'm curious about it's detachable handle and how it will look without the handle. Will it look like a fashionista with no accessories? God forbid!

Another great discovery I made was stumbling across abbi New York. Bags with personality. That's what I like! Probably not as practical but at least a little spunk. I'd enjoy pulling my laptop out of one of these cutie patooties.

One thought...as great as it would be to have a beautiful, unique laptop bag...do I really want that much bag personality?

New Year, Old News

Happy New Year everyone. I've got some great resolution ideas but am still considering whether I really want to start that or just keep up with my "resolving to never make another New Year's resolution". That one has been working out just fine.
Instead, I'll share some more news that's come up over the last week, just in case you've had too much eggnog to notice.

Stevens tied the knot. Our friend Katherine, better known as "Izzy" on Grey's Anatomy, is now hitched. Word on the street is that it was a small, family affair. According to Celebtv.com, co-star T.R. Knight was a bridesman.
Um...not sure how to react to that. A bridesMAN? Ok, if you say so.

Little Miss Alba, who won't be little for long...is sporting a big fat diamond on that significant finger! According to People Mag, Jessica's long-time boyfriend, Cash Warren, popped the question now that he's knocked up his main squeeze.

You can't help but noticing this one because it's so in your face. Have you seen the size of Halle's boobs lately? Holy mackerel! I don't even have anything to say about this one but, whoa sister!

I'm not even reporting on those girls I refer to as "little messes". They've had enough coverage and apparently need adopted by parents who give a crap.
